Itowaruru sono yukari nite ika nareba koi wa waga mi o hanarezaruran

English Translation
Shunned by you as I am,
is it through that very bond,
or why, I wonder,
is it that love will never
take its leave of me at all?
Meaning
Though the one I love shuns me, why is it, I wonder, that love, because of its bond with that person, never leaves me?
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 935

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a love poem"
Composed as a love poem, like the four preceding ones. Shunned as I am, he asks, is it through that bond that love will not leave me? The beloved shuns him and keeps away, yet love, his one bond with that person, will not leave him, and he laments the irony that the person departs while love stays.
The author, "Minamoto no Nakayori," was a poet of the end of the Heian period. Little is known of his career.
It shares the word "itou," "to shun," with "uki o itou wa" in 931 of this book; where 931 speaks from the side of the one who shuns, this poem speaks from the side of the one who is shunned, forming a reversed composition.

First line, "itowaruru": "ruru" is the attributive of the passive "ru," "to be shunned" by the beloved. It shares "itou" with "uki o itou wa" in the fourth line of 931 of this book.
Second line, "sono yukari nite": "yukari" means a bond or connection, "through that bond with the one who shuns me."
Third line, "ika nareba": "for what reason, why."
Fourth line, "koi wa waga mi o": "love, from me," treating love as a person.
Fifth line, "hanarezaruran": "zaru" is the attributive of the negative "zu," and "ran" the present conjectural "ramu" guessing at a cause, "why does it not leave?" The contrast emerges: the person leaves, but love does not.
