Book One Spring Poems 74
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
As one parts from others and sets off along a mountain road amid rising spring haze, the falling blossoms swirl about like the offerings scattered to pray for a safe journey. Overlaying a parting journey with falling flowers, the poem depicts the blossoms as if seeing the traveler off.
First line, "harugasumi," begins with spring haze like poem 42 of this book, but here it is the haze of late spring.
Second line, "tachiwakare yuku," is a pivot word combining haze "rising" and people "parting" as they set out.
Third line, "yamamichi wa," names the mountain road as the path of the journey.
Fourth line, "hana koso nusa to," sets the particle "koso," resolved by the perfective "kere" in the final line. It likens the falling flowers to offerings.
Final line, "chirimagaikere," means "they scatter in a swirl."
