Hana chiru to itoishi mono o natsugoromo tatsu ya osoki to kaze o matsu kana

English Translation
Though I once despised
the wind for scattering blooms,
summer robes are cut,
and the moment summer comes
I wait for the wind to blow.
Meaning
I once resented the wind for scattering the blossoms, yet now that I have cut my summer robes and summer has begun, I can hardly wait for the wind to come.
Commentary
Book Two Summer Poems 82

Headnote: "Composed at the beginning of summer"
The wind that the poet resented in spring for scattering blossoms is now, in summer, eagerly awaited for its coolness; the poem captures how the heart shifts with the seasons. It treats the reversal of feeling toward the same wind, from spring to summer, as the mood of early summer. According to the headnote, it was composed at the beginning of summer.
The author, written as Moriakira no Miko, is Prince Moriakira. A son of Emperor Daigo, he was once reduced to commoner status as Minamoto no Moriakira and later restored as a prince.

First line, "hana chiru to," means "saying that it scatters the blossoms," treating the spring wind as the scatterer of flowers.
Second line, "itoishi mono o," means "though I resented it," with "mono o" as a concessive particle. The past "shi" looks back on the feelings of spring.
Third line, "natsugoromo," leads to "tatsu" in the fourth line. Following the preceding poem's regret at taking off spring robes, this poem sings of the heart after the change to summer robes.
Fourth line, "tatsu ya osoki to," is a pivot word in which "tatsu" means both cutting the summer robe and the beginning of summer. "Ya osoki" means "no sooner than," expressing the feeling of "as soon as summer comes."
Final line, "kaze o matsu kana," speaks of longing for a cool wind, with the exclamatory "kana." The wind resented in the first line becomes the wind awaited in the last, holding within one poem the reversed positions of resenting and waiting.
