Book Two Summer Poems 83
Headnote: "From a hundred-poem sequence"
The poet had assumed that wisteria bloomed only by hanging from the pines, and is surprised to realize that it also blooms on into summer. The wit of the poem lies in using the word "kakaru" both for wisteria twining over a pine and for blooming across the turn from spring to summer. According to the headnote, it is one of a hundred-poem sequence, and like the poem two before it, it belongs to the Shigeyuki Hundred-Poem Sequence.
The author, written as Shigeyuki, is Minamoto no Shigeyuki. Of the Seiwa Genji line, he was a poet of the mid-Heian period. He served the future Emperor Reizei as head of the Crown Prince's guards and later held a series of provincial posts. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "natsu ni koso," means "even into summer," with the emphatic particle "koso," which is resolved by "kere" in the second line. Poems on wisteria continue from here through 88, and this poem begins the sequence.
Second line, "saki kakarikere," means "they bloom hanging over," with "kere," the realis form of "keri" expressing realization, closing the construction begun by "koso." The poem pauses here.
Third line, "fuji no hana," is the wisteria, which blooms from late spring into early summer, taken up here as a summer flower.
Fourth line, "matsu ni to nomi mo," means "only upon the pines." The pairing of wisteria twining over pine is taken up again in the following poems, 84 and 85.
Final line, "omoikeru kana," means "so I had thought," expressing an exclamation as the poet looks back on a mistaken assumption.
