Book Three Autumn Poems 137
Headnote: "Composed at the beginning of autumn"
Concerned for himself, dozing in a summer robe that is still only a single layer, the poet calls on the first wind of autumn to blow with care. The chill at the turn of the season is expressed as a familiar appeal to the wind, and, fitting for the opening of the autumn book, the arrival of autumn is caught in a wind felt on the skin. According to the headnote, it was composed at the beginning of autumn.
Anpō Hōshi was a monk and poet of the mid-Heian period. A great-grandson of Minamoto no Tōru, he took holy orders and lived at the Kawara Palace, Tōru's former residence, where he associated with poets such as Egyō. He is counted among the Later Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "natsugoromo," is the thin robe worn in summer. Whereas poem 79 of Book Two opened the summer book with a robe as thin as a cicada's wings, this book opens autumn with the summer robe still being worn, so that the openings of the summer and autumn books answer each other through clothing.
Second line, "mada hitoe naru," means "still of a single layer," showing that the poet has not yet added layers though autumn has come.
Third line, "utatane ni," means "while I doze," indicating a defenseless body.
Fourth line, "kokoro shite fuke," means "blow with care," calling to the wind in the imperative. The poem pauses here.
Final line, "aki no hatsukaze," names the first wind to blow in autumn, ending on a noun that shows whom the poet is addressing. It answers 214 at the end of this book, which sings of autumn drawing to a close, as the beginning and end of autumn.
