Book Three Autumn Poems 152
Headnote: "In a year when Tanabata fell on a kōshin night"
In a year when Tanabata coincided with a kōshin night, the poet imagines that the Weaver, already loath to waste her night of meeting on sleep, must sleep even less, since the custom of staying awake through the kōshin night is added to it. The poem wittily works in a coincidence of the calendar. According to the headnote, it was composed in a year when Tanabata fell on the day of kōshin.
The author, written as Motosuke, is Kiyohara no Motosuke. A grandson of Kiyohara no Fukayabu, he took part in compiling the Gosenshū and in reading the Man'yōshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber. He was the father of Sei Shōnagon and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "itodoshiku," means "all the more," indicating that kōshin is added to a night of meeting when one would not sleep anyway.
Second line, "i mo nezaruran to," means "that she must not be sleeping at all," with "ran" as an auxiliary of present conjecture. It has an extra syllable.
Third line, "omou kana," means "so I think," and the poem pauses here, in inverted order with the second half.
Fourth line, "kyō no koyoi ni," means "on this very night of today," which fell on kōshin. On the kōshin night it was customary to stay awake.
Final line, "aeru tanabata," means "the Weaver who meets her love," ending on a noun. By inversion, it names at the very end the one the poet is thinking of.
