Book Three Autumn Poems 153
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The Weaver grieves at parting when she meets her love, and grieves from longing when she does not; when, the poet wonders, will her heart ever be at peace? The poem succinctly captures the fate of the Tanabata love, which holds grief both before and after the meeting.
First line, "aimite mo," means "even when they meet," referring to the grief of parting after the meeting.
Second line, "awade mo nageku," means "she grieves even when they do not meet," with the negative conjunctive particle "de." Pairing the times of meeting and not meeting, it shows grief in both. It gathers into one poem what 143 of this book sang of waiting before the meeting and what 149 sang of tears after parting.
Third line, "tanabata wa," means "the Weaver."
Fourth line, "itsu ka kokoro no," means "when will her heart," with the questioning particle "ka," which is resolved by "beki" in the final line.
Final line, "nodokekarubeki," means "be at ease," with "beki," the attributive of the conjectural auxiliary.
