Book Three Autumn Poems 161
Headnote: "On going to Saga to dig up plants for the garden"
Captivated by maidenflowers he cannot tire of though he has gazed at them all day, the poet thinks of spending the night on the fields like a traveler. Facing flowers he came to dig up for his garden, he finds it hard to leave their beauty as it is in the wild. According to the headnote, it was composed on a trip to the fields of Saga to dig up flowering plants for a garden.
Fujiwara no Nagatō was a poet of the mid-Heian period and a son of Fujiwara no Tomoyasu. A younger brother of the Mother of Michitsuna, he is known as the teacher of the monk Nōin, and he is counted among the Later Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "higurashi ni," means "all day long."
Second line, "miredomo akanu," means "I gaze yet never tire," with the concessive particle "domo."
Third line, "ominaeshi," is the maidenflower blooming on the fields of Saga. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "nobe ni ya koyoi," means "on the fields tonight," with the questioning particle "ya," which is resolved by "mashi" in the final line.
Final line, "tabine shinamashi," means "shall I sleep as a traveler," with "na" as a perfective auxiliary and "mashi" expressing hesitation. Whereas in 157 of this book someone stayed because of the maidenflowers, here the poet himself would stay beside them, reversing the roles of the one who lodges and the one who gives lodging.
