English Translation
The one who has turned
cold and distant from me now—
her letters, I'll not
keep them even as mementos
of memories that wound
Meaning
The letters of the one who has grown cold to me, I will not keep even as mementos of these painful memories.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 782

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
I will not keep even as a keepsake of painful memories, he says, the letters of one who has turned cold. Letters once exchanged now only call up pain after her change of heart, and he refuses even to keep them by him as mementos, expressing a heart that tries to break free.
The author, "Fujiwara no Nagatō," was the son of Fujiwara no Tomoyasu and a younger brother of the mother of Michitsuna, author of the Kagerō Diary. He was active in the poetic circle of Retired Emperor Kazan, is said to have been the poetry teacher of Nōin, and is one of the Thirty-Six Poetic Immortals of the middle period.
The preceding poem grieved, unable to forget, while this one speaks from the side of one trying to forget, refusing to keep her letters even as mementos, so that the two poems set side by side a heart that cannot forget and a heart that tries to.

First line, "tsure mo naku": "cold and unfeeling."
Second line, "narinuru hito no": "nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu," "of one who has turned cold," implying she was once warm.
Third line, "tamazusa o": "tamazusa" is an elegant word for a letter, here the love letters once exchanged.
Fourth line, "uki omoide no": "of painful memories," showing that the letters now only call up pain.
Fifth line, "katami to mo seji": "ji" is the negative auxiliary of will, "I will not keep them even as mementos." Against "kaku wasurarezu" in the fourth line of the preceding poem, it shows the will to forget.
