Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 781

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
You will not know it, she says, with a heart that never even thinks of me, though I grieve like this, unable to forget. She grieves, unable to forget him, while he never so much as remembers her, and the poem states this gap between hearts that do not meet with a first line that seems to push him away.
The author, "Sagami," was the daughter, or by some accounts the adopted daughter, of Minamoto no Yorimitsu. She took the name from her marriage to Ōe no Kinsuke, Governor of Sagami, and later served Princess Shūshi, daughter of Emperor Ichijō. A poem of hers is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The preceding poem set its hope on a change of the lover's heart, while this one laments a heart that never turns toward her. The contrast of the lover who does not remember and the speaker who cannot forget forms the frame of the poem.

First line, "shiraji kashi": "ji" is the negative conjectural auxiliary and "kashi" a final particle of insistence, "you surely will not know." The poem pauses here and stands in inverted order with the lines that follow.
Second line, "omoi mo idenu": "nu" is the attributive of the negative "zu," "that never even thinks of me."
Third line, "kokoro ni wa": "in such a heart," naming the one who "will not know" in the first line.
Fourth line, "kaku wasurarezu": "re" is the irrealis form of "ru" expressing possibility, "unable to forget like this." It is set against "omoi mo idenu" in the second line.
Fifth line, "ware nagekutomo": "tomo" is an adversative particle, "even though I grieve," returning to "shiraji kashi" in the first line.
