Book Three Autumn Poems 166
Headnote: "For a folding screen of Retired Emperor Yōzei, at a scene of small-hawk hunting"
Because people visit only briefly, in passing on a hunt, the sleeves of the maidenflower's blossoms are wet with dew like tears. Likening the maidenflower to a woman lamenting the shallowness of a man's visits, the poem compares the dew on the flowers to tears. According to the headnote, it accompanied a scene of small-hawk hunting painted on a folding screen belonging to Retired Emperor Yōzei.
Ki no Tsurayuki was the leading compiler of the Kokinshū, the author of its Kana Preface and of the Tosa Diary, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "kari ni nomi," is a pivot word in which "kari" means both hunting and "for a while," the same phrase as the fourth line of 164 in this book. With this poem, the four-poem sequence using "kari" as a pivot word comes to a close.
Second line, "hito no miyureba," means "since people appear."
Third line, "ominaeshi," is the maidenflower likened to a woman.
Fourth line, "hana no tamoto zo," means "the sleeves of her flowers," likening the maidenflower's blossoms to a woman's sleeves. The emphatic particle "zo" is resolved by "keru" in the final line.
Final line, "tsuyukekarikeru," means "are wet with dew," overlaying the dew on the flowers with tears. Whereas the preceding poem sang of the casual visitor whose heart was captured, this one sings of the maidenflower's grief in waiting for one who comes only lightly, so the man's side and the woman's side form a pair.
