Book Three Autumn Poems 167
Headnote: "When the Teiji-in Retired Emperor had a garden planted before him and commanded, 'Compose a poem on this'"
Because these are flowers planted by Retired Emperor Uda and roped off as his own, the poet says, even the dew settling on them must look as beautiful as jewels. By praising the flowers, the poem expresses respect for the retired emperor who cherishes them. According to the headnote, it was composed when the Teiji-in, that is, Retired Emperor Uda, had flowering plants set in the garden before him and ordered a poem on them.
Ise was a woman poet of the early to mid-Heian period and a daughter of Fujiwara no Tsugukage. She served Onshi, consort of Emperor Uda, and became the mother of Nakatsukasa. She is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "uetatete," means "having planted and arranged them."
Second line, "kimi ga shime yū," means "which you have roped off as yours," with "kimi" referring to Retired Emperor Uda.
Third line, "hana nareba," means "since they are such flowers," with "ba" marking an established condition.
Fourth line, "tama to miete ya," means "so as to look like jewels," with the questioning particle "ya," which is resolved by "ran" in the final line.
Final line, "tsuyu mo okuran," means "does even the dew settle," with "ran," the attributive of the present conjectural auxiliary. Whereas the dew on the maidenflowers was personified in 159 and 160 of this book, here it is likened to jewels, sung of as an ornament for the flowers.
