Roma-ji

Izuko ni ka koyoi no tsuki no miezaran akanu wa hito no kokoro narikeri

English Translation
Where in all the land
could the moon of this night
fail to be seen?
It is the human heart that
never has enough of it.
Meaning
Where could tonight's moon not be seen? It shines everywhere. What never has its fill is the human heart.
Commentary
Book Three Autumn Poems 176

Headnote: "For a folding screen in the same reign"
Tonight's harvest moon can be seen anywhere, the poet says, yet what still longs to keep gazing without tiring is not the moon's doing but the human heart. The poem contrasts the moon's beauty, reaching all alike, with the human heart that is endlessly drawn to it. According to the headnote, like the preceding poem, it accompanied a folding screen made in the Engi era of Emperor Daigo.
The author, written as Mitsune, is Ōshikōchi no Mitsune. One of the compilers of the Kokinshū, he was ranked alongside Ki no Tsurayuki and is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

First line, "izuko ni ka," means "where," with the rhetorical particle "ka," which is resolved by "zaran" in the third line.
Second line, "koyoi no tsuki no," refers to the moon of this night, the fifteenth of the Eighth Month. Taking up "koyoi zo aki no monaka" from 171 of this book, it carries on the harvest moon. The next poem, 177, also has the words "koyoi no sora."
Third line, "miezaran," means "could it fail to be seen? No, it is seen everywhere," a rhetorical question. The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "akanu wa hito no," means "what never tires is a person's." It answers "akazu nomi" in 174 of this book, singing of the heart that never tires of the moon.
Final line, "kokoro narikeri," means "is the heart, after all," with "keri" expressing the exclamation of realization.
