Book Six Parting Poems 345
Headnote: "On hearing the wild geese calling on the road as I was going on a journey"
The poet says that he is not the only traveler, for the wild geese too are crossing the sky of their journey, crying as they go. Finding in the geese crossing the sky companions on the road, he takes some slight comfort from them in the loneliness of travel, while their cries deepen his longing. According to the headnote, it was composed on hearing the wild geese calling while on the road.
The author, written as Yoshinobu, is Ōnakatomi no Yoshinobu. From the Ōnakatomi family, who served as chief priests of the Ise Shrine, he took part in compiling the Gosenshū and in reading the Man'yōshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "kusamakura," is a pillow word for journeys, here meaning the poet himself on the road. It follows "kusa no makura" in 344, the preceding poem.
Second line, "ware nomi narazu," means "not I alone."
Third line, "karigane mo," means "the geese too." In 304 of this book the voice of returning geese made the poet think of the distance of the road of parting, while here the geese on their journey are seen as fellow travelers.
Fourth line, "tabi no sora ni zo," means "in the sky of the journey," emphasized by the particle "zo."
Final line, "nakiwataru naru," means "seem to cross crying," with "naru" an auxiliary of inference from sound, resolving "zo" in its attributive form.
