tightening the strings up high,
the birds, it seems, are playing.

Book Seven Names of Things 372
Headnote: "Higurashi (evening cicada)"
The poet says that the sound of the wind in the pines rings out like an autumn melody, as though the birds had tightened the strings to a high pitch and were playing. Likening the sound of the pines to the koto and stringing together words associated with it, "tune," "tightening," and "playing," the poem hides the name "higurashi" given in the headnote in "hiku rashi" in the final line. The headnote names the thing hidden in the poem.
The author, written as Tsurayuki, is Ki no Tsurayuki. The leading compiler of the Kokinshū, he wrote its Kana Preface and the Tosa Diary, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The final line of the main text reads "tori zo," which does not match "kaze zo" in the line giving the reading. The main text is followed here.
First line, "matsu no ne wa," means "the sound passing through the pines."
Second line, "aki no shirabe ni," means "as an autumn melody," likening the sound of the pines to the koto.
Third line, "kikoyu nari," means "it sounds," and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "takaku seme agete," means "tightening the strings to a high pitch," and has eight syllables, one more than the norm.
Final line, "tori zo hiku rashi," means "the birds seem to be playing," hiding the name "higurashi" in "hiku rashi," with "zo" resolved by the attributive "rashi." All three poems of the sequence hide the evening cicada in the sounds "kurashi."
