Book Seven Names of Things 373
Headnote: "Hitomotogiku (a single chrysanthemum)"
The poet says that though people have long called the flowers of the moor fickle, it is just there that he can hardly pass by the blossoms. Within the feeling of being drawn to flowers known to be fickle, the name "hitomotogiku" given in the headnote is hidden in the run of sounds "hito mo tokikuru" in the second line. The headnote names the thing hidden in the poem.
The author, written as Sukemi, is Fujiwara no Sukemi. A son of Fujiwara no Hirotsune, he was a mid-Heian poet known as Tōroku. He excelled at poems hiding the names of things, and his personal collection is the Tōrokushū.
The third line of the main text reads "nobe shimo zo," which does not match "mono shimo zo" in the line giving the reading. The main text is followed here.
First line, "ada nari to," means "that they are fickle."
Second line, "hito mo tokikuru," is understood to mean "as people too have long told." It hides the name "hitomotogiku." After the evening cicadas of the preceding poems, the name of a flower is sung of once more.
Third line, "nobe shimo zo," means "that very moor," strengthened by "shimo" and the particle "zo."
Fourth line, "hana no atari o," means "near where the flowers bloom."
Final line, "sugigate ni suru," means "I can hardly pass," with "gate ni" meaning "unable to," and "zo" resolved by the attributive "suru."
