Book Eight Miscellaneous Poems I 478
Headnote: "Composed when sent to China"
The poet says that as evening comes his sleeves are cold, and he longs to go home and put on the robe his wife unstitched and washed. According to the headnote, it was composed when he was sent to China. As he feels the evening chill far from home, he expresses his longing for the wife waiting there and the robe she prepared. It closes the run of robe poems that began with 474 in this book, widening feelings about robes into a traveler's homesickness.
The author, written as Hitomaro, is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro. A court poet of the Asuka period, he is revered as the sage of poetry and the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. The Shūishū includes many Man'yōshū poems under his name.
A poem of nearly the same form appears among the poems of the envoys to Silla in Book Fifteen of the Man'yōshū. In the Shūishū it is included as a poem from when Hitomaro was sent to China.
