Shiranami wa tatedo koromo ni kasanarazu Akashi mo Suma mo onoga uraura

English Translation
Though white waves rise up
like the warp, they do not lie
layered on a robe;
Akashi and Suma both
are each their own shore apart.
Meaning
Though the white waves rise like the warp threads, they never lie layered upon a robe; Akashi and Suma each remain their own separate shore, never joined like a robe's front and lining.
Commentary
Book Eight Miscellaneous Poems I 477

Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poet says that though the white waves rise, they never lie layered upon a robe, and Akashi and Suma remain each its own shore. Echoing in "tate" both waves rising and the warp of cloth, and in "ura" both shore and lining, he deftly uses words tied to robes to sing of two neighboring bays that never become one. Continuing the robes of the three preceding poems, it also recalls the bay of Akashi in 464 of this book.
The author, written as Hitomaro, is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro. A court poet of the Asuka period, he is revered as the sage of poetry and the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, and he is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. The Shūishū includes many Man'yōshū poems under his name.

First line, "shiranami wa," means "the white waves."
Second line, "tatedo koromo ni," means "though they rise, on a robe." "Tate," rising of the waves, echoes "tate," the warp threads of cloth.
Third line, "kasanarazu," means "they do not overlap," an associated word for layering robes. The poem breaks here.
Fourth line, "Akashi mo Suma mo," means "both Akashi Bay in Harima and Suma Bay in Settsu," naming two neighboring bays.
Final line, "onoga uraura," means "each its own shore." "Ura" is a pivot word joining "ura," a bay, and "ura," the lining of a robe, an associated word for robes.
