Mitegura ni naramashi mono o subegami no mite ni torarete nazusawamashi o

English Translation
Would that I could be
a sacred offering of cloth,
that the sovereign gods
might take me into their hands
and hold me ever near!
Meaning
If only I could become an offering of sacred cloth! Then I would be taken into the gods' hands and could stay close beside them.
Commentary
Book Ten Kagura Songs 578

The poem wishes that the poet could become an offering of sacred cloth, for then he would be taken into the gods' hands and could stay close to them. Envying the offerings presented to the gods, it simply expresses a longing to be near the gods. Together with the next poem, 579, it sings of the sacred offering.
This book is devoted to kagura songs, and from its opening poem to 586 come songs sung at the court kagura, with neither author nor headnote recorded. It is related to the torimono songs sung of the sacred offering.
The third line of the main text reads "subegami no," which does not match "sumegami no" in the reading line. Here the main text is followed.

First line, "mitegura ni," means "an offering of sacred cloth," the gift presented to the gods. The next poem, 579, places the same word in its first line, "mitegura wa," and its final line, "miya no mitegura."
Second line, "naramashi mono o," means "if only I could become," with "mashi" a counterfactual auxiliary and "mono o" exclamatory. The poem breaks after this second line.
Third line, "subegami no," means "of the gods," understood as a reverent word for all the gods or the god who rules them.
Fourth line, "mite ni torarete," means "taken into the gods' hands," speaking of the offering being presented to the gods.
Final line, "nazusawamashi o," means "I could stay close beside them," repeating the counterfactual "mashi" and exclamatory "o" of the second line to restate the wish.
