Book Ten Kagura Songs 579
The poem declares that the sacred offering in hand is not the poet's own but belongs to the shrine of Toyookahime, who dwells in the heavens. Proclaiming that the offering held by the dancer is a precious offering of the goddess's shrine, it conveys both the honor of dancing with it and reverence for the goddess. Where the preceding poem, 578, wished to become an offering, this poem presents the offering itself as belonging to the goddess's shrine.
This book is devoted to kagura songs, and from its opening poem to 586 come songs sung at the court kagura, with neither author nor headnote recorded. It is related to the torimono songs sung of the sacred offering. Toyookahime is a goddess identified by some with Amaterasu and by others with Toyouke.
First line, "mitegura wa," means "this sacred offering," beginning with the same word as the first line of the preceding poem, 578, "mitegura ni."
Second line, "waga ni wa arazu," means "is not mine," and the poem breaks after this second line.
Third line, "ame ni masu," means "who dwells in the heavens," with "masu" an honorific form of "ari."
Fourth line, "Toyookahime no," means "of Toyookahime," naming the goddess to whom the offering belongs.
Final line, "miya no mitegura," means "the offering of the shrine," repeating "mitegura" from the first line and ending on a noun.
