Book Eleven Love Poems I 659
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that since the heart that loves the beloved has no bounds, surely the gods of heaven and earth must know it. It calls the gods of heaven and earth to witness a depth of feeling that cannot be fully conveyed to another. Using the same phrasing as "Ōhara no kami mo shiruramu" in 657, it widens the gods from those of a single shrine to all the gods of heaven and earth.
First line, "ametsuchi no," means "of heaven and earth."
Second line, "kami zo shiruran," means "the gods must surely know," with the binding particle "zo" resolved by the attributive "ran." The poem breaks after this second line. It is the same phrasing as the second line of 657, "kami mo shiruramu."
Third line, "kimi ga tame," means "for your sake."
Fourth line, "omou kokoro no," means "the heart that loves," the same line as the second line of 633 and others.
Final line, "kagiri nakereba," means "since it knows no bounds," giving in inverted order the reason for the second line. Against the limited life of the second line of 642, "inochi wa kagiri," it sings of a boundless love.
