Book Twelve Love Poems II 705
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that since the waves that lodge in the Somekawa run swift, the poet will no longer resent a groundless rumor even if it rises. Having come to rest in a river whose name means "dyeing," he resigns himself to the rumor that is bound to follow. The Tales of Ise also has a poem asking how anyone who crosses the Somekawa could escape being dyed, and the river was sung as a place where one is steeped in love.
The author, Minamoto no Shigeyuki, was a son of Minamoto no Kanenobu of the Seiwa Genji who served as Provisional Governor of Sagami and other posts and in his later years went down to Michinoku. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
First line, "Somekawa ni," means "in the Somekawa," a poetic place in Chikuzen Province whose name echoes "somu," to dye, suggesting being steeped in love.
Second line, "yado karu nami no," means "of the waves that borrow lodging," a figure for the poet who has come to rest in the river.
Third line, "hayakereba," means "since they run swift," with "ba" after the perfective form expressing cause.
Fourth line, "nakina tatsu tomo," means "even if a groundless name rises," laying a rumor's "rising" over "rising," a word associated with waves.
Final line, "ima wa uramiji," means "I will not resent it now," with "ji" an auxiliary of negative intention.
