Ashihiki no Katsuragiyama ni iru koto no tachite mo ite mo kimi o koso omoe

English Translation
On Mount Katsuragi,
foot-wearying mountainside,
like that lingering,
whether standing, whether still,
it is only you I think of.
Meaning
Like that lingering upon Mount Katsuragi, whether I stand or sit, it is only you that I think of.
Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 779

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that, as with lingering on Mount Katsuragi, whether standing or sitting one thinks only of the beloved. The upper verse serves as a preface leading to "tachite mo ite mo," standing or sitting, expressing a single-minded heart that thinks of the beloved at every moment.
A similar poem in Book Eleven of the Man'yōshū sings of the cloud rising over Mount Katsuragi. The third line of the main text reads "iru koto no," which does not match "iru kumo no" in the reading line; here the main text is followed. By the reading line, the sense would be a cloud resting over Mount Katsuragi.

First line, "ashihiki no," is a pillow word modifying "yama," mountain, the third in the sequence beginning "ashihiki no."
Second line, "Katsuragiyama ni," means "on Mount Katsuragi," a poetic place on the border of Yamato and Kawachi.
Third line, "iru koto no," means "like the lingering," repeating the same word as "ite mo" in the fourth line, and serving as a preface leading into the lower verse.
Fourth line, "tachite mo ite mo," means "standing or sitting," that is, at every moment.
Final line, "kimi o koso omoe," means "it is you alone I think of," concluding in the perfective form "omoe" in answer to the binding particle "koso." It shares the phrasing "kimi o koso" with the final line of 782, "kimi o koso mate."
