逢ふことは夢の中にもうれしくて
寝覚めの恋ぞわびしかりける
Roma-ji

Au koto wa yume no uchi ni mo ureshikute nezame no koi zo wabishikarikeru

English Translation
To meet with you
even in the midst of dreams
brings me such delight,
but the longing when I wake
is wretched beyond words.
Meaning
Meeting you brings me joy even in a dream, but the longing I wake to afterward is wretched indeed.
Commentary
Book Fourteen Love Poems IV 921

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says that meeting one's love is joyful even in a dream, but the longing left on waking is all the more painful. It sings of the poignancy of meeting in dreams, where the joy of the dream only heightens the loneliness of waking.
From 919 to 922 in this book, four poems in a row sing of dreams.

First line, "au koto wa," means "meeting."
Second line, "yume no uchi ni mo," means "even within a dream," taking up "yume" of the preceding poem, 920.
Third line, "ureshikute," means "is joyful, but," running adversatively into the lower verse.
Fourth line, "nezame no koi zo," means "the longing on waking." It shares sleep and waking with "nete mo samete mo" in 919 of this book.
Final line, "wabishikarikeru," means "was painful," concluding in "keru," the attributive of the past "keri," in answer to the binding particle "zo."
