Waga goto ya kumo no uchi ni mo omouramu ame mo namida mo furi ni koso fure

English Translation
Can it be that they
like me, within the clouds,
are brooding as well?
For the rain and my tears both
fall and fall without an end.
Meaning
Are the clouds, too, brooding just as I am? For the rain and my tears both keep falling and falling without end.
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 957

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem asks: might the clouds too be brooding as I do? Both rain and my tears keep falling and falling. It likens the pouring rain to tears shed by clouds brooding as one does oneself, overlaying it on one's own figure weeping in love.
The author, "Hitomaro", is Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, a court poet of the Asuka period revered as the sage of poetry and the foremost poet of the Man'yōshū, and one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets. Many Man'yōshū poems are included in the Shūishū under Hitomaro's name.

First line, "waga goto ya," means "like me," with the binding particle "ya" reaching across the second line to form a kakari-musubi with "ramu" in the third. It shares the words with the first line of 965 in this book, "waga gotoku."
Second line, "kumo no uchi ni mo," means "even within the clouds," likening the clouds to beings that brood like people.
Third line, "omouramu," means "might they be brooding," with "ramu" the attributive of the present conjectural, concluding "ya" in the first line. The poem breaks here.
Fourth line, "ame mo namida mo," means "both rain and my tears," setting side by side the rain the clouds shed and the tears one sheds oneself. It takes up "ame furu kawa" from the preceding poem, 956.
Final line, "furi ni koso fure," means "fall and fall," repeating the same verb to heighten the intensity. It concludes with "fure," the realis of the verb "furu," in answer to the binding particle "koso."
