Book Fifteen Love Poems V 980
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says: though they are cold, I tell no one; like the bay of Iwami Lagoon, deep is the resentment within my heart alone. Through wordplay on a place-name, it sings of the pain of a love that hoards deep resentment alone within the breast, confiding in no one.
First line, "tsurakeredo," means "though they are cold." It opens with the same line as the first line of 974 in this book, "tsurakeredo."
Second line, "hito ni wa iwazu," means "I tell no one." The poem breaks here.
Third line, "Iwamigata," means "Iwami Lagoon," a poetic place in Iwami Province, with "iwami" a pivot word taking up "iwa" from "iwazu" in the second line and joining it to the place-name Iwami.
Fourth line, "urami zo fukaki," means "deep is the resentment," with "urami" a pivot word joining "urami," gazing at the bay, an association with the lagoon, and "urami," resentment. It concludes with the attributive of the adjective "fukashi" in answer to the binding particle "zo." The poem breaks here.
Final line, "kokoro hitotsu ni," means "within my one heart alone," inverted with the fourth line. It shares with "waga mi hitotsu no" in 953 and "waga mi hitotsu ni" in 999 of this book the singing of feelings held alone.
