Uraminu mo utagawashiku zo omoboyuru tanomu kokoro no naki ka to omoeba
- English Translation
-
That you don't resent
is itself a thing I find
suspicious to me,
when I think that you may have
no heart that trusts in me.
- Meaning
- Even your not resenting me seems suspicious, for I wonder whether it is because you have no heart that trusts in me at all.

Book Fifteen Love Poems V 981
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem says: even your not resenting me seems suspicious, when I think it may be because you have no heart that relies on me. It sings of love's suspicion, which reads in the other's failure to reproach a shallowness of feeling toward oneself.
First line, "uraminu mo," means "even not resenting."
Second line, "utagawashiku zo," means "suspicious," with the binding particle "zo" forming a kakari-musubi with the third line.
Third line, "omoboyuru," means "it seems," concluding with the attributive of the verb "omoboyu" in answer to "zo" in the second line. The poem breaks here.
Fourth line, "tanomu kokoro no," means "a heart that relies." It answers "tanomeba hito o uramitsuru kana" in 973 of this book, singing from the reverse side the idea that one who relies would surely resent.
Final line, "naki ka to omoeba," means "when I think there may be none," giving by inversion the reason for the upper verse afterward.
