Uramite no nochi sae hito no tsurakaraba ika ni iite ka ne o mo nakamashi

English Translation
If even after
I have told you my reproach
you stay cold to me,
with what words then should I
weep aloud in my grief?
Meaning
If you remain cold to me even after I have voiced my resentment, then with what words am I to weep aloud?
Commentary
Book Fifteen Love Poems V 985

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Topic unknown"
The poem asks: if the other remains cold even after I have voiced my resentment, what words should I weep aloud with then? Imagining a time when even the last resort of reproach has failed, it sings of the dead end of a love with nothing left to do.

First line, "uramite no," means "after reproaching."
Second line, "nochi sae hito no," means "even afterward, that person," with "sae" expressing addition.
Third line, "tsurakaraba," means "if they are cold," a supposition.
Fourth line, "ika ni iite ka," means "saying what," with the binding particle "ka" forming a kakari-musubi with the final line.
Final line, "ne o mo nakamashi," means "should I weep aloud," with "mashi" an auxiliary of hesitation, concluding in the attributive in answer to "ka" in the fourth line. It shares "ne o naku" with the final line of 974 in this book, "ne koso nakarure."
