Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1045

Headnote: "From among the many poems presented by the provincial governor when the Kyōgoku Consort made a pilgrimage to Kasuga"
The poet says that the cherry blossoms, which grieved at blooming in the old capital, seem this year at last to be seen by her. The headnote is the same as that of the preceding poem, 1044, and this too is one of the poems presented by the provincial governor at the Kyōgoku Consort's pilgrimage to Kasuga. Personifying the cherries of Nara, once the capital, it sings of the blossoms' joy at being rewarded by the consort's visit, celebrating her pilgrimage.
The three poems from 1044 to 1046 are taken from the poems presented by the governor of Yamato when the Kyōgoku Consort made a pilgrimage to the Kasuga Shrine.
The author, Fujiwara no Tadafusa, was of the Kyōke branch of the Fujiwara and held posts such as Governor of Yamato. He excelled in music and is said to have composed the gagaku piece "Kochō." The Kyōgoku Consort was Hōshi, a daughter of Fujiwara no Tokihira, who enjoyed the favor of Retired Emperor Uda.

First line, "furusato ni," means "in the old capital," speaking of Nara, the former capital.
Second line, "saku to wabitsuru," means "that grieved at blooming," with "tsuru" the attributive form of the perfective "tsu."
Third line, "sakurabana," means "the cherry blossoms."
Fourth line, "kotoshi zo kimi ni," means "this year, by you," with the binding particle "zo" resolved by the attributive form "naru" in the final line.
Final line, "mienu beranaru," means "it seems they will be seen," with "nu" perfective and "beranaru" the attributive form of the conjectural auxiliary "beranari."
