Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Spring Poems 1046
Headnote: "From among the many poems presented by the provincial governor when the Kyōgoku Consort made a pilgrimage to Kasuga"
The poet says that the people of the capital fill the fields of Kasuga, just as the spring haze spreads over them. The headnote is the same as that of the two preceding poems, and this too is one of the poems presented by the provincial governor at the Kyōgoku Consort's pilgrimage to Kasuga. Likening the crowds who follow the consort and fill the plain of Kasuga to the spring haze spreading across the fields, it praises the grandeur of the pilgrimage.
The three poems from 1044 to 1046 are taken from the poems presented by the governor of Yamato when the Kyōgoku Consort made a pilgrimage to the Kasuga Shrine.
The author, Fujiwara no Tadafusa, was of the Kyōke branch of the Fujiwara and held posts such as Governor of Yamato. He excelled in music and is said to have composed the gagaku piece "Kochō." The Kyōgoku Consort was Hōshi, a daughter of Fujiwara no Tokihira, who enjoyed the favor of Retired Emperor Uda.
First line, "harugasumi," means "the spring haze," which, repeating the sound "kasu," leads to "Kasuga" in the second line.
Second line, "Kasuga no nobe ni," means "over the fields of Kasuga," singing of Kasugano like the two preceding poems.
Third line, "tachiwatari," means "spreads everywhere," and the first three lines, showing the haze spreading, lead to "michite mo" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "michite mo miyuru," means "seen filling them."
Final line, "miyakobito kana," means "the people of the capital," with "kana" exclamatory.
