Book Seventeen Miscellaneous Autumn Poems 1106
Headnote: "For a screen of the thirteenth day of the ninth month of Engi 19: "Riding the moonlight, enjoying the murmuring stream""
The poet says that the moon of this autumn night makes him feel as if, though within the palace, he were gazing at a multitude of islands. The headnote shows it was written for a screen of the thirteenth day of the ninth month of Engi 19 (919), in the reign of Emperor Daigo, on the painted theme of enjoying the sound of flowing water by the light of the moon. In the moonlight shining on the ponds and streams of the palace, he pictures a scene of islands along a distant shore.
First line, "momoshiki no," is a pillow word leading to "ōmiya," the palace.
Second line, "ōmiya nagara," means "while within the palace," standing beside the first line of the preceding poem, 1105, "kokonoe no," in viewing the moon within the palace.
Third line, "yasoshima o," means "the many islands."
Fourth line, "miru kokochi suru," means "it feels as if I were gazing at."
Final line, "aki no yo no tsuki," means "the moon of an autumn night," the poem closing on a noun.
