Commentary
Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Congratulatory Poems 1173

Headnote: "For a screen at the fiftieth-year celebration of the Minister of the Right, Tentoku 4"
The poet says that if the one who will live a thousand years remains, the realm under heaven ruled by the sovereign may rest secure. The headnote shows it was written for a screen made in Tentoku 4 to celebrate the fiftieth year of the Minister of the Right. Binding the long life of the minister directly to the peace of the realm, it praises him as a pillar of the state.
The author, Kiyohara no Motosuke, was the father of Sei Shōnagon and took part in compiling the Gosenshū as one of the Five Men of the Pear Chamber. He is counted among the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.
The third line of the main text reads "suberagi no," which does not match "sumeragi no" in the reading line. Here the main text is followed.

First line, "chitose hen," means "who will pass a thousand years," with "n" the attributive form of the conjectural auxiliary. Like 1161 in this book, it is a screen poem for the fiftieth-year celebration of a Minister of the Right.
Second line, "kimi shi imasaba," means "if you remain with us," with "shi" emphatic, "imasu" an honorific for "to be," and "ba" after the irrealis form expressing supposition.
Third line, "suberagi no," means "of the sovereign."
Fourth line, "ame no shita koso," means "the realm under heaven, indeed," with the binding particle "koso" resolved by the perfective form in the final line.
Final line, "ushiroyasukere," means "may rest secure," the perfective form of the adjective "ushiroyasushi," resolving "koso" in the fourth line.
