Commentary
Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Congratulatory Poems 1174

Headnote: "At the celebration for Higashi Sanjō-in held by the Minister of the Left, when the high nobles took up their wine cups and composed poems"
The poet wonders how many times more, in her reign, they will meet with joyful occasions like this one. The headnote shows it was composed when the Minister of the Left, Fujiwara no Michinaga, held a celebration for Higashi Sanjō-in, Fujiwara no Senshi, and the high nobles took up their cups and composed poems. Thinking that joys like this day's will come again and again, it celebrates the long life of Higashi Sanjō-in and the glory of her age. Higashi Sanjō-in was the mother of Emperor Ichijō and the elder sister of Michinaga.
The author, written as "Kintō, Commander of the Right Gate Guards," is Fujiwara no Kintō. A son of the Regent Fujiwara no Yoritada, he rose to Provisional Major Counselor. He compiled the Wakan Rōeishū and is known for his poem "taki no oto wa" in the Hyakunin Isshu.

First line, "kimi ga yo ni," means "in your reign," speaking of the age of Higashi Sanjō-in.
Second line, "ima ikutabi ka," means "how many times from now," with the binding particle "ka" resolved by "ran" in the final line.
Third line, "kakushitsutsu," means "doing just as now," with "tsutsu" expressing repetition, speaking of gatherings like today's celebration happening again and again.
Fourth line, "ureshiki koto ni," means "joyful occasions," speaking of the joy of the celebration.
Final line, "awan to suran," means "shall we come to meet," with "ran" the attributive form of the auxiliary of present conjecture.
