Book Eighteen Miscellaneous Congratulatory Poems 1194
Headnote: "When the one she had been close to sent no word for a long time, sending bamboo shoots"
The poet asks how many years have passed without his visits, long enough for new bamboo to grow from the old roots of the never-changing bamboo. The headnote shows it was composed when, the one she had been close to sending no word for a long time, she sent him bamboo shoots. Speaking through the gift of shoots and pivoting on "yo," the joints of bamboo and the years, it reproaches a neglect so long that the bamboo has renewed itself, while entrusting her own unchanging heart to the bamboo that keeps its color.
First line, "kimi towade," means "you not visiting," with "de" a negative conjunctive particle.
Second line, "ikuyo henuran," is a pivot word: "yo" means "years" and the "joints" of bamboo. It means "how many years have passed," and the poem breaks after this second line. It uses the same pivot of bamboo joints and years as the fourth line of 1161 in this book, "nagaki yo ni oku."
Third line, "iro kaenu," means "that does not change its color," speaking of evergreen bamboo and laying over it her own unchanging heart.
Fourth line, "take no furune no," means "of the bamboo's old roots."
Final line, "oikawaru made," means "until new shoots grow in their place," presenting the gift of shoots as bamboo grown anew from the old roots, and giving in inverted order the length of time asked about in the second line.
