all the while I live,
since it's never clear, how then
could any bay be seen?

Book Nineteen Miscellaneous Love Poems 1254
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "When, on a rainy day, a servant familiar to her came to a woman whom a man had stopped visiting, saying he had come looking for a bay horse"
The poet asks whether any reflection could be seen in the garden puddles of a house where rain is always falling, since the water never clears. It is placed as a poem of the same occasion as the preceding poem, 1253, and likewise pivoting on "sumu," to clear and to live, and "kage," reflection and bay horse, it says that no bay horse could be seen at a house the man no longer lives in. "Yo to tomo ni ame furu," rain falling all the while, also carries her own life spent in tears since his visits stopped.
First line, "yo to tomo ni," means "all the while."
Second line, "ame furu yado no," means "of the house where rain falls," laying over it a life spent in tears. It shares the falling rain with the first line of the preceding poem, 1253, "ame furite."
Third line, "niwatazumi," means "the puddles" left on the ground by the rain.
Fourth line, "sumanu ni kage wa," is a pivot word: "suma" means the water "clearing" and someone "living" there, and "kage" means "reflection" and "bay" horse. It shares the same pivots with the fourth and final lines of the preceding poem, 1253.
Final line, "miyuru mono ka wa," means "how could it be seen," with "ka wa" a rhetorical question.
