In which direction
might the blossoms now be open?
the moment I think it,
my heart is scattered off
to the hills on every side

The moment I wonder where the blossoms might have opened, my heart scatters off toward the hillsides on every side.
Commentary
Book One Spring Poems I 42

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed as a poem on spring when he summoned hundred-poem sequences"
This poem was composed on the topic "spring" when Retired Emperor Sutoku summoned hundred-poem sequences. The moment the poet wonders in which direction's hills the blossoms have opened, her heart scatters away to the hillsides on every side. A heart that cannot settle in one place but flies off to many hills is expressed by overlaying it with the "scattering" of blossoms.
The author, "Taikenmon'in no Horikawa," was a daughter of Minamoto no Akinaka, head of the Department of Divinities. A lady-in-waiting to Taikenmon'in Fujiwara no Tamako, consort of Emperor Toba, she was one of the leading women poets of the cloistered-rule period. Her younger sister was Jōsaimon'in no Hyōe.

First line, "izukata ni": "in which direction."
Second line, "hana sakinuramu to": an eight-syllable line exceeding the count. "Nu" marks completion and "ramu" present conjecture: "might they have bloomed?"
Third line, "omou yori": "yori" means "as soon as I think."
Fourth line, "yomo no yamabe ni": "to the hillsides in all directions." 64 in this book uses the same phrase, "yomo no yamabe ni akugarete," for a heart wandering in search of blossoms.
Fifth line, "chiru kokoro kana": "chiru" means the heart being scattered and distracted, echoing blossoms scattering in an associated image. "Kana" is exclamatory.
