Book One Spring Poems I 46
Headnote: "Composed on the theme "seeking mountain blossoms from afar" on the day he returned from a visit to the Konoe residence"
Composed by Retired Emperor Sutoku on the theme "seeking mountain blossoms from afar" on the day he returned from the Konoe residence, this poem says that while journeying far to seek mountain cherries, the poet knew plainly from the scent borne on the spring mountain wind that he had reached the blossoms he sought. The conceit is that fragrance reveals the flowers' nearness before their form is seen.
The author, "Poem by Retired Emperor Sutoku," is Retired Emperor Sutoku, eldest son of Emperor Toba; "gyosei" denotes a poem composed by an emperor or retired emperor. He led the poetic world of the cloistered-rule period and commissioned the Kyūan Hundred-Poem Sequences, but after his defeat in the Hōgen Disturbance he was exiled to Sanuki and died there.
First line, "tazunetsuru": "tsuru" is the attributive of the completive "tsu," "that I have sought."
Second line, "hana no atari ni": "near the cherries I was aiming for."
Third line, "narinikeri": "keri" expresses realization, "so I have come," and the poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "niou ni shirushi": "shirushi" is an adjective meaning "evident": "it is plain from the fragrance."
Fifth line, "haru no yamakaze": ending on a noun, it names the mountain wind that carries the scent. The next poem, 47, was composed by Fujiwara no Tadamichi on the same day, so the two convey a single day of the Retired Emperor's outing.
