Haru o hete hana chiramashi ya okuyama no kaze o sakura no kokoro to omowaba

English Translation
Spring after spring,
would the blossoms ever fall
if we thought
the wind in the deep mountains
were the cherries' own heart?
Meaning
If the wind in the deep mountains were the cherry trees' own heart, would the blossoms fall, spring after spring? Surely they would not.
Commentary
Book Two Spring Poems II 86

Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on cherries when presenting a hundred-poem sequence in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Like the preceding poem, this was composed on "cherries" for the Horikawa Hundred-Poem Sequence. If the wind blowing in the deep mountains were the cherry trees' own heart, surely they would never scatter their own blossoms; yet spring after spring the flowers fall. Holding that it is the wind, not the cherries' will, that scatters the blossoms, the poet voices resentment at their yearly falling through the logic of a counterfactual.
The author, "Fujiwara no Mototoshi," was the son of Minister of the Right Fujiwara no Toshiie. He was ranked alongside Minamoto no Toshiyori in Emperor Horikawa's poetry circle and was the teacher of Fujiwara no Shunzei, compiler of the Senzai Wakashū. His official career was undistinguished, ending at Junior Fifth Rank, Upper Grade.

First line, "haru o hete": "passing through spring after spring," that is, every year.
Second line, "hana chiramashi ya": "mashi" is the counterfactual auxiliary and "ya" is rhetorical: "would the blossoms fall? Surely not." The poem pauses here and is inverted with the lines that follow.
Third line, "okuyama no": "of the deep mountains," far from human dwellings.
Fourth line, "kaze o sakura no": "the mountain wind as the cherries'," linking the wind that scatters with the cherries that are scattered.
Fifth line, "kokoro to omowaba": a hypothetical condition, "if one thought it their heart." It answers "mashi" in the second line to form the counterfactual construction.
