Book Three Summer Poems 165
Headnote: "Composed as a poem on the cuckoo for the poetry contest of the Regent when he was Minister of the Right"
Composed on "the cuckoo" for a poetry contest held by the present Regent, Kujō Kanezane, when he was still Minister of the Right. Waking late at night, the poet heard the cuckoo; has it passed already, he wonders, when its voice still seems to be right beside his pillow? The sensory image of a departed voice lingering on the pillow evokes the dreamlike mood of waking in the night. It is a poem by the compiler Shunzei himself.
The author, "Master of the Empress Dowager's Household Shunzei," is Fujiwara no Shunzei, son of Provisional Middle Counselor Fujiwara no Toshitada. He served as Master of the Empress Dowager's Household and rose to Senior Third Rank. He is the compiler himself, who chose the Senzai Wakashū at Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa's command, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
First line, "suginuru ka": "nuru" is the attributive of the perfective "nu" and "ka" interrogative: "has it passed already?" The poem pauses here.
Second line, "yowa no nezame no": "of my waking in the dead of night." In 152 of this book, too, the cuckoo is heard on waking.
Third line, "hototogisu": an inversion that names the subject of the first line afterward.
Fourth line, "koe wa makura ni": "its voice, still at my pillow."
Fifth line, "aru kokochi shite": "with the feeling that it is there," a trailing ending that leaves an echo. Where 162 of this book lamented a cuckoo that passed "leaving no trace," this poem finds a trace of the voice remaining on the pillow.
