Yo o kasane nenu yori hoka ni hototogisu ika ni machite ka futakoe wa kiku

English Translation
Night upon night
I have gone without my sleep:
O cuckoo,
how else should I wait for you
to hear a second song?
Meaning
Besides going without sleep night after night, O cuckoo, how else am I to wait in order to hear your second song?
Commentary
Book Three Summer Poems 166

Headnote: "Composed when the Major Captain of the Right Sanefusa, while still a Middle Captain, had sets of fifteen poems composed"
Composed when Sanjō Sanefusa, now Major Captain of the Right, had people compose sets of fifteen poems while he was still a Middle Captain. Besides waiting sleepless night after night, the poet asks, what other way is there to hear the cuckoo's second call? Posed by one who has already spent many sleepless nights, the question of how else to wait conveys both how hard it is to hear a second call and the stubbornness of the waiting heart.
The author, "Priest Dōin," is Dōin, whose lay name was Fujiwara no Atsuyori, son of Fujiwara no Kiyotaka of the Ministry of Civil Affairs. He rose to Assistant Head of the Right Horse Bureau before taking holy orders. He is known for his devotion to poetry into great old age, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The last line of this text reads "futakoe wa kiku," which does not agree with "hitokoe wa kiku" in the reading line. Here the text is followed.

First line, "yo o kasane": "night upon night."
Second line, "nenu yori hoka ni": "nu" is the attributive of the negative "zu": "other than not sleeping." Poems 148 and 149 of this book also depict sleepless nights waiting for the cuckoo.
Third line, "hototogisu": an address to the cuckoo.
Fourth line, "ika ni machite ka": the interrogative "ka" closes with the attributive "kiku" in the last line, asking how one should wait.
Fifth line, "futakoe wa kiku": "will I hear a second call?" Like "futakoe to" in the first line of 149, it expresses waiting for a second call after the first.
