Book Four Autumn Poems I 275
Headnote: "Composed when having thirty poems on the moon composed"
Composed by the poet himself when he had others compose thirty poems on the moon. The autumn moon, he realizes, was waiting on the far side of the clouds on the high peaks for the sky to clear and the day to grow dark. The passage of time until the clouds part, night falls and the moon appears is captured by personifying the moon as waiting of its own accord.
The author, "the Hosshōji Lay Priest and Former Chancellor," is Fujiwara no Tadamichi, son of Chancellor Fujiwara no Tadazane. He served successively as Regent, Chancellor and Grand Minister, and after taking holy orders was called the Lord of Hosshōji. He was also an important patron of poetry, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
The next poem, 276, with "kumo fukiharau takane yori," sings of the moon rising once the clouds on the high peaks are swept away, sharing "takane" and "kumo" with this poem. "Fuji no takane ni sumu tsuki" in 283 of this book also sings of the moon over a high peak.
First line, "aki no tsuki": names the subject, the autumn moon.
Second line, "takane no kumo no": "of the clouds on the high peaks." The next poem, 276, also speaks of "takane" and "kumo."
Third line, "anata nite": "on the far side," where the moon hides behind the clouds.
Fourth line, "hareyuku sora no": "of the sky as it clears."
Fifth line, "kururu machikeri": "keri" expresses realization: the moon, the poet finds, was waiting for the sky to darken, a personification of the moon.
