it pierces through my heart:

at midnight with the moon so clear,
the wind across the reeds

More than ever, it pierces me to the heart: the wind across the tops of the reeds at midnight on the autumn fields, under a clear moon.
Commentary
Book Four Autumn Poems I 290

Headnote: "Composed as a moon poem when composing a hundred-poem sequence"
Composed on "the moon" when composing a hundred-poem sequence. At midnight on the autumn fields, when the moon shines clear, the wind across the tops of the reeds pierces the poet more than ever. In the sound of the wind in the reeds heard under keen moonlight, he feels the sorrow of autumn more deeply than usual.
The author, "Captain of the Right Gate Guards Yorizane," is Fujiwara no Yorizane, son of Minister of the Left Fujiwara no Tsunemune. He was then Captain of the Right Gate Guards and later rose to Chancellor.
It shares its last line with "mazu mi ni shimu wa ogi no uwakaze" in 233 of this book and moves that scene to a moonlit night. Where 233 told of the reed wind piercing one amid the signs of autumn by day, this poem tells of the reed wind at midnight under a clear moon.

First line, "tsune yori mo": "more than usual."
Second line, "mi ni zo shimikeru": "zo" closes with the attributive "keru": "it pierces me." The poem pauses here and is inverted with the lines that follow. Poems 232, 233 and 259 of this book also speak of being pierced.
Third line, "aki no no ni": "on the autumn fields," modifying "tsuki sumu" in the fourth line.
Fourth line, "tsuki sumu yowa no": "of the midnight when the moon shines clear," expressing the "moon" of the headnote's topic.
Fifth line, "ogi no uwakaze": ends on a noun, the wind across the tops of the reeds, the same final line as 233 of this book.
