Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1048
Headnote: "Composed on the theme "Viewing the sea" when people composed poems for the Hirota Shrine poetry contest"
Like the preceding poem, this was composed on the theme "viewing the sea" at the Hirota Shrine poetry contest. Looking far out over the sea before the shrine, I see fishing boats indistinguishable from the sky, he says. Gazing over the sea before the Hirota Shrine, the far-off fishing boats blend into the line between sky and sea, as if floating in the sky, depicting a distant view.
The author, "Yorizane, Intendant of the Right Gate Guards," is Fujiwara no Yorizane. A son of Ōinomikado Tsunemune, he later rose to chancellor.
This is the last of the three poems composed at the Hirota Shrine poetry contest. It shares the third line, "miwataseba," and the word "kumoi" with the preceding poem, 1047; where the preceding poem sings of waves mistaken for the sky, this one sings of fishing boats mistaken for it. It also shares the fifth line, "ama no tsuribune," with 1043 of this book.
First line, "harubaru to": "far and wide."
Second line, "Omae no oki o": "Omae" means before the gods of the Hirota Shrine, "the offing of the sea before it."
Third line, "miwataseba": "when I look out." It is the same line as the third lines of the preceding poem, 1047, and the next, 1049.
Fourth line, "kumoi ni magau": "magau" means to be indistinguishable, "not to be told apart from the sky." It answers "nami wa kumoi no" in the fourth line of the preceding poem.
Fifth line, "ama no tsuribune": ending in a noun, the same line as the fifth line of 1043 of this book.
