Off Harima's shore,
looking out where Suma's sky
has opened clear,
I find the waves out there belong
to the far-off clouds above
Meaning
Looking out over the sea off Harima in a clear spell at Suma, I find that the waves far away belong to the sky itself.
Commentary
Book Sixteen Miscellaneous Poems I 1047

Headnote: "Composed on the theme "Viewing the sea" when people composed poems for the Hirota Shrine poetry contest"
Like the preceding poem, this was composed on the theme "viewing the sea" at the Hirota Shrine poetry contest. Looking out in a clear spell at Suma off Harima, I find the waves belong to the sky, he says. Gazing over the clear sea at Suma, the waves far off melt into the sky at the horizon, as if they were rising in the heavens, and he sings of a grand view of the sea.
The author, "Provisional Middle Counselor Sanemune," is Fujiwara no Sanemune. A son of Fujiwara no Kinmichi, he later rose to palace minister.
It shares its first two lines, "Harimagata Suma no," with 989 of this book. Where 989 sings of a moonlit night at Suma, this poem sings of the view of the sea in a clear spell at Suma. It also shares the third line, "miwataseba," and the word "kumoi" with the next poem, 1048.

First line, "Harimagata": the sea of Harima Province. It is the same line as the first line of 989 of this book.
Second line, "Suma no harema ni": "in a clear spell at Suma." It answers "Suma no tsukiyome" in the second line of 989 of this book.
Third line, "miwataseba": "when I look far out." It is the same line as the third lines of the next poem, 1048, and of 1049.
Fourth line, "nami wa kumoi no": "kumoi" means the sky, "the waves, of the sky." It answers "kumoi ni magau" in the fourth line of the next poem, 1048.
Fifth line, "mono ni zo arikeru": the emphatic binding particle "zo" closes with "keru," the attributive of the exclamatory "keri," "they belong to the sky."
