Book Four Autumn Poems I 297
Headnote: "Topic unknown"
The autumn of the poet's life, grown late as the night grows late, fills him with sorrow, for the moon sinking in the west will rise again on another night. Contrasting the moon that sets and rises again with his own old age that can never return to youth, he entrusts a deep lament for the last years of life to a moonlit night.
The author, "Fujiwara no Kiyosuke Ason," was the son of Fujiwara no Akisuke, Master of the Left Capital Office. Heir to the poetic learning of the Rokujō Fujiwara house, he was one of the foremost scholars of poetry of his day and wrote treatises such as the Fukuro-zōshi. A poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
From this poem through 300, poems lamenting one's own life before the moon follow one another.
First line, "fukenikeru": "ni" is the continuative of the perfective "nu" and "keru" the attributive of "keri": "having grown late," overlaying the deepening of night with the advance of age.
Second line, "waga yo no aki zo": "yo" is a pivot word for "a lifetime" and "night," the thing that grows late. "Autumn" stands for the last years of life. "Zo" links with "naru" in the third line.
Third line, "aware naru": "is deeply sad," closing the construction with "zo." The poem pauses here.
Fourth line, "katabuku tsuki wa": "katabuku" means for the moon to sink toward the west.
Fifth line, "mata mo idenan": "na" is the irrealis of the intensive "nu" and "n" conjecture: "will surely rise again," setting the returning moon against a self that never returns.
