Book Four Autumn Poems I 296
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'The Moon Shines on Dew on the Grass'"
Composed on the topic "The Moon Shines on Dew on the Grass." In each of the countless dewdrops forming at the leaf-tips of the cogon field, the moon dwells, sharing out its light. Capturing how a single moon is reflected in every one of countless dewdrops as its "sharing out" its light to dwell in them, the poem paints a delicate and beautiful scene of a moonlit field.
The author, "Fujiwara no Chikamori," was the son of Fujiwara no Chikayasu, Governor of Suō. He served as an officer of the Left Gate Guards and studied imayō in the service of Retired Emperor Go-Shirakawa. He took holy orders after the Retired Emperor's death.
Following the preceding poem, 295, it sings of the moon over the cogon field. Where "tsuki yadorikeri" in 281 of this book showed the moon lodging on waves tinted with bush clover, this poem shows the moon lodging in each drop of dew, contrasting the scales of one moon and countless drops.
First line, "asajihara": a field covered with low cogon grass, the same word as the third line of the preceding poem, 295.
Second line, "hazue ni musubu": "hazue" are the tips of the leaves, and "musubu" means for dew to form into beads.
Third line, "tsuyu goto ni": "in every drop of dew."
Fourth line, "hikari o wakete": "sharing out its light," the single moon giving its light to countless drops.
Fifth line, "yadoru tsukikage": ends on a noun, the moonlight reflected in the dew. Like "tsuki yadorikeri" in 281 of this book, it says the moon "lodges" in water.
