Book Five Autumn Poems II 305
Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Wind on the Moor' at a poetry contest held at the house of the Hosshōji Lay Priest and Former Chancellor when he was Palace Minister"
Composed on the topic "Wind on the Moor" at a poetry contest held at the residence of Fujiwara no Tadamichi, the Hosshōji Lay Priest and Former Chancellor, when he was Palace Minister. On the autumn moor, where the grasses wither from the tips as the dew turns cold, the poet hears the lonely sound of the wind. Overlaying the withering of the moor that the eye sees with the sound of the wind the ear hears, he depicts the loneliness of the moor as autumn deepens.
The author, "Fujiwara no Tokimasa," was a poet of the cloistered-rule period who took part in contests at Fujiwara no Tadamichi's house, but little is known of his life.
The next poem, 306, uses the same words, "sabishiku mo aru ka," so that this poem of the lonely wind on the moor leads on to the next, which hears a deer's cry in the wind over a field of bush clover.
First line, "tsuyu samumi": "mi" is a suffix of cause, "because the dew is cold."
Second line, "uragare moteku": "uragaru" is for leaves to wither from the tips, and "moteku," a contraction of "mote yuku," means "gradually."
Third line, "aki no no ni": showing where the wind blows.
Fourth line, "sabishiku mo aru": "lonely indeed," sharing the phrasing of the next poem's fourth line, "sabishiku mo aru ka," in 306.
Fifth line, "kaze no oto kana": the exclamatory "kana" closes the poem, presenting at last the topic "wind on the moor" as sound.
