Commentary
Book Thirteen Love Poems III 794

Headnote: "Composed on the topic 'Love sought and lost' at a poetry contest held when the Hosshōji Lay Priest was Palace Minister"
Composed at a poetry contest held when the Hosshōji Lay Priest, Fujiwara no Tadamichi, was Palace Minister, on the topic "love sought and lost," a love whose partner cannot be found though one comes calling. You told me carelessly, he says, to look for the cedar of Miwa, yet when I come calling, you will not meet me. It takes as its source poem the anonymous Kokinshū poem "My hut lies at the foot of Mount Miwa; if you long for me, come visit, at the gate where the cedar stands," and reproaches one who invited him to seek the gate where the cedar stands yet will not meet him when he comes.
The author, "Fujiwara no Tokimasa," was an official and poet of the late Heian period. Little is known of his career. "The Hosshōji Lay Priest, Palace Minister" in the headnote is Fujiwara no Tadamichi, who later served as Regent, Chancellor and Grand Chancellor, took the tonsure and was called the Hosshōji Lay Priest.

First line, "naozari ni": "carelessly, not in earnest."
Second line, "Miwa no sugi to wa": "Miwa" is Mount Miwa in Yamato, and drawing on the Kokinshū poem "My hut lies at the foot of Mount Miwa; if you long for me, come visit, at the gate where the cedar stands," the cedar by the gate marks her dwelling.
Third line, "oshieokite": "having told me," showing that she herself told him where she lived.
Fourth line, "tazunuru toki wa": "when I come seeking," giving the "seeking" of the topic.
Fifth line, "awanu kimi kana": "kana" is an exclamatory particle, "you who will not meet me!", giving the "lost" of the topic and reproaching her.
