Commentary
Book Five Autumn Poems II 307

Headnote: "Composed when a hundred-poem sequence was presented in the reign of Emperor Horikawa"
Composed when a hundred-poem sequence was presented in the reign of Emperor Horikawa. The sound of the storm blowing down from Mount Mimuro is lonely enough, the poet says, yet with it, like a companion, comes the voice of a deer calling for its mate. Laying two sounds together, the storm and the deer, she depicts autumn in the hills, where loneliness grows ever deeper.
The author, "Nijō Taikōtaigōgū no Higo," was a lady in the service of Princess Reishi, daughter of Emperor Shirakawa, known as the Nijō Grand Empress Dowager. She was one of the authors of the Horikawa Hyakushu.
The next poem, 308, also drawn from the Horikawa Hyakushu, likewise sings of a deer's voice seeking its mate.
The fourth line of the text reads "tsuma yobu shika no," which does not match "tsuma tou shika no" in the reading line. Here the text is followed.

First line, "Mimuroyama": a mountain in Yamato, known as a sacred mountain where gods descend, and sung of as a place for autumn leaves.
Second line, "orosu arashi no": "orosu" means the wind blows down from the mountain.
Third line, "sabishiki ni": "ni" adds what follows, "to this loneliness, moreover."
Fourth line, "tsuma yobu shika no": "of the deer calling its mate." It shares the voice of a deer seeking its mate with the next poem's fourth line, "tsuma tou koe no," in 308.
Fifth line, "koe tagū nari": "taguu" means to accompany or keep close, and "nari" infers from sound, "I hear its voice joining the storm."
