Book Five Autumn Poems II 315
Headnote continued from the preceding poem: "Composed on the topic 'Hearing Deer While Moored at Night'"
Composed on the topic "Hearing Deer While Moored at Night." As the night boat rows out from the Minato River, the poet says, on the following wind that drives it even the deer's voice crosses the strait along with the boat. He sees the deer's voice borne on the wind as a companion traveling alongside.
The author, "Dōin Hōshi," is Fujiwara no Atsuyori, son of Fujiwara no Kiyotaka, who took holy orders late in life. He was known for his deep devotion to poetry, and a poem of his is included in the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu.
Opening with the same line, "Minatogawa," as the first poem of the run, 312, and, like the preceding poem, 314, depicting a boat rowing out of the harbor, it closes the run on "Hearing Deer While Moored at Night."
First line, "Minatogawa": the same opening as the first poem of the run, 312, so that the run's beginning and end answer each other.
Second line, "yobune kogiizuru": a hypermetric line of eight syllables. "Yobune" is a boat that sets out by night, and the verb is shared with "kogiizureba" in the preceding poem, 314.
Third line, "oikaze ni": "oikaze" is a following wind, blowing from behind in the direction the boat goes.
Fourth line, "shika no koe sae": the additive "sae," "not only the boat but even the deer's voice."
Fifth line, "seto wataru nari": "nari" infers from sound, "I hear it crossing the strait." It shares "seto" with the preceding poem, 314.
